Somewhere in the wilderness while wandering alone,

A traveller saw smoke and headed north, chilled to the bone,

He came upon a Mentor, sat beside a roaring fire,

She offered rest and both of them sat warming in the quiet,

He asked her had she been here long, this haven in the stars,

She snorted at his sentence and her eyes looked hard and far,

She said "You call it Haven, but you only know today,

The hand of war has held this land too many times to say,

The peace you see around you is the spoil of countless lives,

You call this place Calypso so their memory survives",

The Traveller felt shame-faced, he struggled with his speech,

He asked her of the times before and what she wished to teach,

"I'll tell you all you need to know" she answered with a smile,

"Not just beasts and robot troops have come here to defile",

"I'll tell you of the Angels, and the havoc that they wreaked",

The night drew in around them as he listened to her speak,

She told of many years before, when she was in her prime,

Hunting had become her trade, her future was defined,

When from the skies came warriors like nothing ever seen,

They soon would call them Angels and they learned to fear their screams,

From many years beyond us, they'd travelled through the black,

Desperation fuelled them as they made each fresh attack,

Twice the height of humans and with wings of fire behind,

Dropping from the heavens with their deadly weapons primed,

They fought them off as best they could, but endless Angels came,

Overwhelming all attempts to halt them at their game,

Then unity was found among the leaders far and wide,

Each clan, tribe and society put differences aside,

The humans, beasts and robots formed an army for the fight,

The soil of old Calypso burned three shades of black that night,

Adversaries and enemies fought side-by-side as one,

The Angels still outnumbered them, but all said "Let them come",

The battle raged for many days, the bodies masked the ground,

The pause in reinforcements was the only welcome sound,

In one such time of fleeting calm the dead had ceased their noise,

A veteran of many conflicts sang out to his boys,

"I'm tired of fighting Angels, it's like pulling wings off flies,

Stood knee-deep in feathers but the bastards still survive!"

The next wave came and took him but the fight was fierce and fast,

His men stood firm and held them off with monsters at their backs,

The feared and truly fearsome ran between them into battle,

And all stood open-jawed and watched the Angels die like cattle,

The days of conflict over, the last wave was not followed,

The Men and Beasts and Robots thanked each other for tomorrow,

A truce was called to mark the day, and all those there agreed,

Two weeks went by until the Peace fell prey to basic needs,

And so there is the story of the Angels and their war,

A dropped stitch in the tapestry of living here before,

The traveller got lost in sleep and dreamed of fights and feathers,

He woke beside a glowing fire but she was gone forever.
