Alright before we gegin, I would like to stress to both the mods and the people who participate in tis discussion, that this is in regards not only to the game itself, but also the people behind the game, the players.. and in fact that is where this discussion starts?.. and probably ends.. Now that we got that out of the way, Let's start off with the basics..

Humans are passionate beings, And in fract alot of people express themselves in a way that really shows either their good (or bad sides ) in a setting, and it's ususally these positive (or negative ) people who can help make or break a community.. So the real question is..
Is Entropia Universe... A fancom?

Now to begin with what is a fandom? Well you can either look at it at either the webster dictionalry of being a fan, or that of Google's Definition of being a fan.. and we'll stick to the Google defintiion for the moment.

Now according to the definition of a Fandom in Google (and yes anyoen can goodle "Fandom Deifinition" the derfinitions that make up a fandome are in fact a two parter here. And in fact let's look at the two definitions ()But we'll focus i on only one of the two..

Fandoms are (according t the Google Definition) is in fact: "The state or condition of being a fan of someone or something." Sure there are fandoms all over the place.. and we are fans of some one..

But let's look at the second definition.. and in fact this is where we start to peel away the statement here.. Th second Definition of being a fandom is in fact

"The fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, (etc.), regarded collectively as a community or subculture."

Now stop and think about this.. And in fact let's explore this deeper..

A fandom is a community of people who are fans of a given topic, be it a person, a sports team, a ficitonal series, either writeen or viewed or even animated, (Such as Cartoons) but it can be also applied into that last part (Etc.) as there are "Game fans as well.. (yes you heard me. There are game fandoms as well.) and in fact we as a community (note that second definition again that I bolded and Underlined), that puts this inot context.

Games can have fandoms and in fact in our Universe which we callEntropia, that not a day goes by where we hear people talk not only about this game (like I am now), but other games as well (and I won't go into any of the other gams, as we know who or rather wht they are.) But let's stop and think . that we are a community, a subcultuer you might say of a particular game... And in fact to define what a fandomis, we have to go back to perhaps one of the first Fansoms in the Modern world.. and that is of course Sherlock Holmes..

(Elementary My Dear Watson).

Yes We have literaryr fancomes (and I won't mention, them, ) we also have fandoms of other sorts (Science Ficiton and Comic books most notably, we have Fans of certain TV series or even animate dshows (yes we know that too), but the last part is that some of us are fans of games.. (and I'm not only talking sports, but also video games in genral..(and what Is Entropia Universe? Answer. A game.)

So it wouldn't surprise me that there are other fandoms out there for all the games you can meition.. and believe me ther eare fans of M*******t, and F****** 4, and even fans of W**** O* *******t). and yes, even entropia Univers has a community, a group of people who enjoy the game..

Now then the next question is.. What makes a good fandom.. what makes a bad one? Well this is where we get into an area of a shade of grey.. To be honest there are no right nor wrong answers here .. What makes or breaks a fancom is ususually how people react how they behave in a community or subculture.. and how they either acccept differnt opinions or reject them and in some cases some fans go to the extreme.. (and in this case Entropia Univers eis noexception..)

Sure this is a real cash Economy game (and I stress the world game) and yes, in the last 13 years we've taken this game and turned it into a subcultuer of sorts, whether we make new friends, understand differnt cultures or religions, or even think about getting rich. (Yes I'm putting all of under the microscope, even myself)

But then let's ask a question? What makes a good fandom what makkes a bad one? Well it's the actual people or players who make or break a fandom.. and it includes games as well..

I mean a day doesn't go by when someoen is talking about Real life i this game, and then of course there are some of us who are rude and inconsiderate of others, They literally try to foce players out of a game, jsut so that they can feel superior.. The real quesiton I guess I am asking.. is are our thoughts Superior to Anyone else's? The simple answer to this is in fact 'no'.

But yet I see fans who come into the game from other gams and to be honest some of the attitudes that exist are in fact rather poor to misaligned.. You hear people talking aobut how Game A or Game B is better than Entropia Universe or the exact Opposite.. that Entroipia Universe is in fact Better than Game A or Game B..

and you have people in this game that help ruin it.. They come in and they bring their real life issues into a game tha tis supposed to be fun..(Note what I said.. Fun).

In short, this isn't aobut the money, it's about the fun..

I mean some of us try to be helpful. Be it on our own selective planets or the #Rookie Chat Channel. Sure I'll probably be ostracized for it, but then When someone brings up a compl;laint or a issue with the game they always come here and whine or complain about it. Whensomeoen thinks the game is great, well then they sing the praises of it. And sure we have our arguments, our differneces but in fact the issue is , that some players actually help make the game better, others make it worse..

Oh and who here has heard abut this game being dDynami? Well I finally figured out in the last month what makes the game dynamic. and in fact it's a little soemthing that doesn't deal wtih Loot pools or loot theories , or who is a reseller or who isn't , who's a space pirate or who isn't.. who's a scammer or who isn't.. in short, I finally figured out what it is that makes this game deynamic..

The answer is simple.. People make this game dynamic..

That's right it's the people who make this game dynamic, and it's the people who help make or break a game..

Now tthe next question is this.. What makes any fandom or any game eithera good experience or a bad one? Answer .. People..

Sure we have players of all ages, Ranging from 13 year olds to that of 50 and even50 somthings.. some of us are parents.. some of us are grandparents.. and some of us are just ordinary joes, some of us are rich, some of us are poor. in short we're a subculture of sorts. So in a way Entropia Universe is a Fandom...

"But Hold On, Ben" you say. "How is it that that it's us the people who help make or hurt our game?"

The answeri is this.. We brin our attitudes and our opnions into the game , In a real way, we bring a bit of our "Real life experiences" including our attitudes our morals, and our ideas into game.. Sure we complain to Mindark abut the game, and sure they don't listen, but why? The answer is.. it's us who help make or greak a game. (And ususally those "Game -Breakers" ae the ones who are in fact the ones who have to stroke their own egos...while the game makers are the ones who help others help understand the game a bit better..

okay at that point you can say "Mind Officially Blown"...

Yes, sometims a majority of us keep silent. That's the realism of our own immersion in the game, but on the flip side, we do have minorities in this game that expressi those opinions or ideas or thoughts, be it positive or negative. We help build this community or destory it with our deeds, actions and words..

The positive side folks ar the ones who try to help build us up , to make us bee seen in a positive and fun light.. The Negative side folk tend to rear this game apart accusing it being everything from a sham and a scam to that of an expensive game to that of being a casino..

But then we also have people who are neutral but want people to enjoy a wonderful experience..

or we are the same people who help make them leave..

Now People ar the dynamic part of this game.."Wr are the ones who consider this game best, or worse , and some of us try to compare this game to other games.. That's about as objective as comparing an Apple, Orange or your favorite food, to that of dirt, sand, gravel and rocks.. Ther eis no comparison..

Yet people tend to look at this as either the best or the worst Experience of their lives. The funny thing is that one player I helped today asked or made a rather unique comment.. his (or her) comment wa this

"How do I wn at this game? (and yes I've heardother similar idealisms including "How do I get rich?"

The ting isthi si s a game that deals with a real cash economy... and we're all part of this.. Each and everyo one, including myself.

andit's ouractions, oru attitudes and out thorughts that help either make or break this game..

So yeah there's that "Dynamic" i'm talking about..

The fact of the matter is this.. When you take away the money, take away the skills, take away the fun, and take away all possible Outside influences (Bing Positive or negative), the end result is.. Entropia Universe is just what people say it is. It's a way to get rick (Usually quick they say, but in reality it takes a lot of hard work and investments, in making wise or foolish choices, and in fact knowing what to do or what not to do.

So in a way, This game is about choice, and who we interact with,. being who we want to be in our Alternativve Life (or lives). (Afte rall we all now about how people are, they always try to find a way to win at a game, even if they have to cheat, Lie, steal, or even commit murder.. Just lie the real people do in real ife..

(Pretty deep thought there don't you think?)

But then some of us drag our problems and issues into the game. We bring vice talk and everythign into this game, we bring our problems into this game, and we even judge jury and execute people in this game..

(And yes Mind Ark says that we should have one avatar and it is that you b (and only you) build your avatar's reputation, or destory it. Whoever is behind thekeyboard isn't eh same who is in the game.. We're all living our lives in an alternate form of expression, some of it negative, some of it psoitive, and some of with the attitude of "Meh, it's just a game." So yeah it takes two to tango, and three to dance. The differnce here is that our game is not a tango but a dance..

Believe me if you could see what I hear a lot.. People wanting to destory theis game, people tring to help others make this game better, the real issue is how much each of us contribute ot helping make or break this game..

(If you could see what I hear.)

I mean you ahve people talking about all the negative and positive aspects of real life, in this game.. you see them talking about hos this game is ba or good..

But then..we go back to the question about EU, and this is.. Are we a fandom?

I would say at this point, we ar a fandom A cultuer and a commuity that makes this game worth while or not.. I mean you have the folks who help and the fols who hurt, you have the positives and the negatives in this game, and above all we're the dynamic here, not the game itself but we are the actual part of the dynamic..

(Kind of makes you wonder what kind of experiemental lab rats we really are..

Inclosing ar ewe a fandom? I would say yes, and for good reason.. We have a community (Check) we have a subculture (that of being a Sicence fiction (andin one case FantasY )) Subculture, and that we also have a positive and negative group who voice in on their opinions on how this game wors (or how it doesn't work.)

In short, this games back to something I alway stell palyers and real people out in the real world..

"Art Imitates Life, Imiaties art."

What doe sthis mean?

It's that we take our own experiences be it positive or negative, and we bring it into game, but then we take our expeirnece in game and take that back to Real life.. back an forth over and over again.

Pretty interesting that I said that no? (Probaby some of you will say no... but then this is just an observation , nothing morenothing less.)

But then we hide behind the keyboard, we hide and try to use our superior or inforior selves to get what we want..

(Beg for a gun, scam a person, help a person out, the list goes on and on..)

and yes even though we have good people in game, we also have bad ones.. and in fact these are the people who don't realize that their own dynamics affect their own results..

(You put a person out of game by turning them off to it, you end up getting a desired negative result..
You put a psoitive experience in and you get a desiired result again..(Namely ofr those wio are money minded, we get better loot)

(And sure some of us comment on such.. Thepeople who lose or gain money.. back and forth it goes..or as I say it..

"Art (or gaming) imitates Life(Real word Experiences) imiatates Art (Back to gaming)

PRetty profound thought ther edon't ou think?

but then hey, I'm just one person, what I do or don't do or what I can or can not do, makes or beraks this game, but then the same holds true for all of us.. What we make or not make in choices affects everyone else.. in a way, we're a community, a subcluture of sorts..

So then are we a fandom? I would say, awitha bout that 90 certainity that we get loot, that we are indeed a fandom.. a subculture of people who either love and enjoy this game or who hate it..

(And it's funny how a bunch of players act.. Some act Mature and thought provign, others act like adults who are child like, and still others are kids trying to be mature and grown up aor immature and childish or maybe it's the adults.. hard to say who's who in this silly little game. we call entropia..

(Have i struck a nerve? Good...Maybe then that will snap us all back to the reality that this game is just that.. a game, and it's a real cash economy game, and what happens in game. In short, anyting positive or negative you say or do in this post reflect really back on all of us..

PRetthy profund thought, #2 .. )

heh Well I'm going to leave it as such.. what you make of this game is what you take out of it.. if you want to be greedy, do so, if you want to be arrogant, do so, if you want ot help others, do so.. if you want to read this post, do so.. or not. again.. it's up to choice..
and if you do decide to respond positively or negatiely, again that;'s your choice.. to do so.)

(Pretty Profound thought Number 3). what we do or not do in game affects all of us..

After all this is just an observation of who we are as a fandom, and how people ract makes a fandome look good or bad..

"The thing is.. Go ask another gorup.. The ones who are in T*****r, which isn't a game but a commuity) and yo'll see what I'm talking aobut..

So with that, I'll leave it up to the folks to decide.. if you hae something to say, say it,be it negative or positive, be it good or bad, I bet and I phope that no one really responds to this thought.. or maybe everyone should.. after all like you said it's a game, it's a casino, it's a positive and negative experience fo you, and for others.. After all we are a gaming community and a gaming subculture.. a

and with that we are a fnadom.. Enough said..

*Edit* :Oh and if you want a deeper look into this .. Check utthis video on youtube.. and you'll see that Fandoms can be either good or bad.. depending on how you look at it.

You're digging too far.

This thing actually had the phrase "In short" in it.

But yeah I think we are all fans and we hate things and love things about it, and try to help it, but in the end we are just sitting on the sideline and the referees don't listen, so it's best we just go home and worry about our own shit and stop caring about it because every season, the coach sucks and we never make the playoffs and if you yell too loud you get ejected from the loot pool in the centerfield bleachers.

TBH, I skimmed the OP.

Just want to say, do not confuse "fans" with "fanbois". One is good, the other is bad for any game they latch on to.

The first Cosplay/fan person I ever met was back in the 70's. My dad rented out a spare bedroom to this young guy who was going to college. He was kind of strange, but aren't we all. He was totally into Sherlock Holmes. He had all of his leather bound Sherlock Holmes books. He drank scotch. I think they based Ron Burgundy from Anchor Man off this guy. He had a tweed jacket. He had the tweed hat with two bills facing front and back. He would wear all of this stuff all of the time. He even had this big long curved Calabash/Meerschaum pipe he smoked that looked like the one Sherlock Holmes had. I loved the smell of that Captain Black tobacco he smoked, it smelled like chocolate chip cookies baking. He spoke at long length about these pipes and what it took to get the white Meerschaum on the pipe to just the perfect coloring. I hate smoking, I can't stand cigarette or cigar smoke, its noxious to me, but I liked the smell of pipe smoke for some reason. He had a rocking chair that he would sit in and smoke and read his books. I would not be surprised if he had a Sherlock Holmes forum now

Lol this guy sounds like a hoot...I would have loved to had that guy around growing up :)

All we had was a foreign exchange student from Italy for a year that we would make do things and laugh... He was a great sport. Asking him to talk like a mad Irish guy would leave ya laughing for two days. Plus he would hit on anything that moved. I loved that guy. He left and became a doctor in Italy, so we didn't scar him too bad.

I don't know what this had to do with anything, but this thread needed a kickstart.

What he said.
