I got one, just one, and a few of the people on my fl have gotten them too visiting this site. But it only happened on one day. I heard rumors of some sort of "test" that was going on...and I guess it worked. I knew right from when I heard that EF was purchased that whoever bought it MUST have bought it to make money. Now I guess its confirmed. and NO, its not anything already on my computer that gave me the popups. I never ever get popups. NEVER. I scanned and re-scanned using a couple different scanners. The thing that bothers me most about this is that one of my friends has a 13 year old little brother who was looking at the forum with him, and POP there was a naughty porno popup. If popups are going to be the next new feature for EF, can you please make them clean at least?

Your thread was originally deleted by the moderators because it was deemed inappropriate, with many unfair and untrue assumptions passed off as fact. I have decided to reinstate your post and respond to your concerns.

No such advertising as you describe: popups, adult material, etc. has ever been used on EF, nor will such be used in the future. If you have seen such ads, I can assure you that they did NOT come from EntropiaForum or its servers. I have addressed such questions in the past in this post:

I am well aware almost all major corporate web sites use cookies and other types of programming to track data on there site. But, will you also allow these advertisement companies, or any such company this site will be affiliated with in the future. To install any form of cookie, script, or software that could hinder our PC's or track our internet usage BEYOND this web site?

This is great, but completely unrelated to the above. So don't use it as your answer. Spam and Spyware are 2 completely different things.

To give a straightforward answer to your questions: No.

This is why the Privacy Policy contains links to the privacy policies of our ad suppliers. Obviously, we have no control over Google's practices, for example. But at least this way, you can inform yourself of their privacy policy.

And as Etopia helped point out, cookies are very limited in what they are allowed to do (on the client side), so they are not a very big security risk.

I can assure you that EntropiaForum will only deal with those advertising companies that have the highest standards of privacy protection. Actually, at this point (and the foreseeable future) the ONLY ads on EntropiaForum are Google Adsense ads. And since these types of ads are used on literally MILLIONS of websites, I doubt we have much to worry about with regard to spyware and such.

In any case, EntropiaForum will never use any kind of popup/popunder ads, nor will it ever request you to download any activeX or other type of potentially malicious program. Likewise, we will never use any advertiser that does any of those things.

Also, your assumption that I MUST have bought this forum to make money is misguided. In fact, this forum currently earns much less from the sparse Google ads than it costs to host. This does not include additional costs for software upgrades, technical assistiance for upgrading the software and moving to the current server (thanks SuperVB!), hiring designers to create new template skins (next major project, already underway) or hiring programmers to create custom features beyond what the standard vBulletin software can achieve. My investment in this forum is long-term, and is unlikely to result in a major windfall for me personally. I knew this when I first considered buying the forum.

I bought EF because I am a big believer in the future of EU, and the future growth of the community surrounding it. I also was aware that Mindbuster had limited time and resources to continue adding the features and enhancements to EF to ensure its continued position as the prime resource and communication tool for the EntropiaUniverse community. I have the time and resources to offer such to the forum, and I am very dedicated to the project of making EF the best it possibly can be, by offering the highest quality user experience, content and software features.

In summary:

No. Never. No chance. Won't happen.

As stated above, the only non EU-related ads on EntropiaForum are the Google Adsense contextual text ads.

None of the following types of advertising have ever, or will ever be used on EF: popups, popunders, activex, flyover, adult-related, download requests or any other potentially malicious installations.
