Rain Man got hacked...

Status
just my 2 pec

phone MA, be really friendly and ask them for contact details of the local police and who in thier organisation should be the legal contact (put the pressure back on them)

also in this call be sure to ask for all the names of the directors of thier company and the names of the support staff who have so incompetantly dealt with this issue

... write personally to the directors.... nicely......

imo the key here is to start a dialogue with MA and if some suppord bod with cut n patse answers is not up to the job then u must go higher... a management or director lvl?

is MA listed on the local stockmarket? if so then they will be eager to suppress any negative media, every listed comany needs to mainain its stock price..... if they are not listed.... lol well they they may not care :(

reading between the lines, the change in eula regarding rumors could usually be put in place if a company were considering a float, this could be the best way to stop player based negative media and without negative media they have a better chance of higher stock value.... lol will i get locked for saying that??

but in most organisations director lvl may not be aware of the problems occuring on a day to day basis..... make them aware!!

but in all negotiations of this type be friendly and nice to them, flyig off the handle of making accusations will not help

i hope they help to sort this out bro

Dont you think it's *blatantly* obvious? The fact that noone else has been complaining of this means that yeah this is a hacked *personal computer*...

If someone has cracked the PE database do you *really* think they would only have robbed off with *1* user account? And let's face it.. there are other user accounts with alot more valuables sitting in them than Rain Man's ;)

Of course I think its obvious.
I'm just offering scenarios that *might* happen.
If someone has found a way into MA's database they would be pretty stupid to go for high profile accounts and they would also be dumb to hack as many accounts in the fastest possible time as both of these would force MA to stop running PE to investigate.
The trick with things like that is to take a little here and a little there.

Sorry Rain Man... those comments were not aimed at you. They were aimed at everyone who was saying that MindArk ought to be *made* to investigate this.

You are right in thinking about going to the police. However the right way to go about it is to get in touch with the Internet Crime Division... only they will know who is truly responsible and they will aide you in tracking down this scum bag.

Best of luck to you :)

Read this and understand it... MindArk are not responsible for the hacking of Rain Man's account.

Rain Man's *HOME PC* got hacked... trust me.. if someone hacked the PE database do you *really* think they would be sitting back not giving a fuck? ha! ha!

Here is what *Rain Man* needs to do...

http://www.cybercrime.gov/reporting.htm

Not sure if this website is much use to most of the people outside of the USA. There doesn't appear to be any mention that I can find with regards to helping those in other countries, and only mentions National, States etc etc?? :dunno:

Contact Police HeadQuarters. They have a Cyber Crime Division... these are the people that track down peados and phishers... you dont think the world relies on America for that do you? ;)

I didn't think that at all. :D

Although the Americans might.

Cool links Wanda +rep :)

Woah. Hang on. I have a question. Somewhere in the beginning of the thread, you stated:

Rain Man said:
I've got a virus scanner, firewall, and all that jazz. I have never given out my password to anyone.

and

Rain Man said:
Note that I run a firewall and a virus scanner at all times.

But now you say this:

Rain Man said:
I used to run a PC without a virus scanner or firewall, and did so for well over a year. I can scarcely imagine how messed up my machine was. Since the incident I've installed ZoneAlarm, which seems quite effective (it tells me it's blocked over 600 access attempts so far) and have run full system virus and spyware scans.

I am now much more concerned about the security of my PC.

Please tell me the above-mentioned incident was not in fact your avatar being hijacked...

he did mention he used windows built in firewall

Hehehe absolutely ;)

A hacker will get round a properly configured firewall anyway :D

I'm in no way a hacker, but I could easily get around *any* software firewall. These are *on* the pc they are meant to protect, actually inside that PC, after the network packets have already come/gone to/from that PC. Real hackers (not script kiddies) basically ignore software firewalls and will get in anyway. Buy a hardware FW - they come for as little £20 GB - that's CHEAPER than the cost of a (non-free obviously) software one

I'm not sure about that though... you prolly can get around the "free" firewalls but a nice *nix box with a software firewall is quite good protection.. :wise:

well, most people dont use *nix - especially on this forum, as PE only works on windows, and how many of the PE players here use a smoothwall or similar?

I was talking *ANY* software firewall for Windows

aah.. well windows firewalls isn't much protection.. they work more or less like an advance spamfilter.. ;)

wooooops, was'nt allowed to write such things, our future cop told me.. no humor, noo humor at all. too bad :(

Prolly MA staff who sits around all day hacking ppls account to make others buy gold card :p haha

I'd consider reading the COU before making statements like that if I were you.

Its an unfounded and highly inflammatory rumour that could get you permbanned.

Back on Topic: If you're running a good router with a built in firewall and keep the firmware upgraded you can be fairy sure that your safe from intrusions.

I tested mine here: http://grc.com/

Yes, I realize that I implied a contradiction there - though the point at which I did not have a firewall was many months ago and not very recent at all.

Here's an update of correspondence with support that I have had. Some of you may be interested...

First Support Request
2005-07-25 Adam Hollett:
I think my account has been hacked or my password stolen. My account is currently locked (apparently someone did something bad with my avatar), and unfortunately the 'My Items' page tells me that all my possessions are missing except for the most basic (clothes, blueprints). Someone has been using my account without me knowing.

I have not given my password to anyone.

A few minutes ago a read an email from someone on my friendlist which reads as follows:

'Well something happened earlier today when I got home from the gym. I log on to find your avatar logging on and off repeatidly and then you talk to me. You ask for a weapon.. I think something is wrong its not late there (and it is in Europe) and you are tired and have to go to bed when I wont lend you a weapon... I'm worried something happened to your account. You were typing with improper grammar - there is something wrong.'

The behaviour described there does not suit my character at all. That report comes from ***, who has an avatar named '***'.

Can you please advise me on what to do and let me know if it's possible for me to get my things back?
2005-07-25 MindArk Support:
Hi! Since it is your own responsibility to protect your self against such attacks there is not much we can do. What you can do is to turn to your local police and report this matter. When they contact us, we will supply them with any information needed to solve this case. We advice you to protect your system better in future. The first step will be to install a firewall and scan your computer for viruses and other suspect programs. After that change your password and login, this is done by reactivating your account at the website. For total safety consider buying a Gold Member Card.

Second Support Request
2005-07-25 Adam Hollett:
In reponse to support case #47930:

I would like to request that my account be unlocked. If you were to verify the IP address(es) accessing my account yesterday, there should clearly be a difference between my normal IP(s) and the one used during the account takeover.

I would also like to ask about the status of my items. Since they are no longer associated with my avatar, are you able to tell me what happened to them? Apparently they were sold to a Trade Terminal, traded to another avatar, or dropped on the ground and retrieved by another avatar.

I have been playing Project Entropia for well over a year and have invested a large (in relative terms) amount of money into it. The loss of my items does not bother me terribly, as they are all replaceable. I am, however, disheartened by your 'Too bad, it's not our problem.' response to my support case.

I would also like to inform you that I run both a firewall and anti-virus software, so the advice given to me in the case was not necessarily relevant.

Support cases should be more open to discussion and investigation rather than being one-shot chances at fixing things up. If you feel that you need more info to reply to a case, then ask for it - don't give some generic response and close the case.

I hope that the troubles with my avatar can be worked out and that I can continue to enjoy the virtual universe as much as I have so far. Thank you.
2005-07-26 MindArk Support:
Hi! Our system has automatically locked your account since it has detected a programme on your computer, which could interfere with PE. We will now unlock your account again. Please make sure that you do not run any such programmes simultaneously with PE. Note that if you continue to run such programmes, your account will be locked again and we might consider terminating your account permanently.

Third Support Request
2005-07-26 Adam Hollett:
In response to cases #47930 and #47996:

I still request that you, if possible, let me know what happened to the items that were stolen when my account was hacked. The illegal program used (as mentioned in case #47996) must have been used by the hacker and not myself.

Please, if you can, give me some information on the status of my possessions.

An infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of typewriters will eventually compose a coherent support response.

Too bad it's not today. =/ Damnit I hate scripted auto replies.

They better start sending you IP logs of who did what and at what time, etc, etc.

I still say calling MA would be the better of two evils. Support really doesn't have a clue as far as this matter is concerned. Seems like a copy and paste job.

As far as MA giving out IP logs Dash I don't think they will or can. Theres liabilty issues at stake.

Didn't Marco say that most of the staff would be on Vacation right around now?

Maybe they left Fluffy the server Hampster in charge,eh? :D

Keep at them.
Every time they close a support case send another quoting all the previous support numbers, ask them politely not to close the support case.
