Help: Tree harvesting

That not smart ass but literally correct answer. Harvestable trees only look like normal trees, they are bound to certain spots and respawn on exactly same spots some time after harvesting. You can tell that they are harvestable by a shining marker on the trunk that is visible with the tool equipped.

Check around [Calypso, 87152, 90388, 222, Waypoint] to see an example, there is quite a few (or just run in a random direction in a place with trees with the tool equipped and eventually will notice one; it will always wait for you there).

I'd also free look when harvesting, i.e swipe the cursor around while running (as opposed to looking around)

Can’t wait until he stops playing. Can’t be a dick this much early on.

GoGeek, a way forward would be to do a search on the Forum for Tree Harvesting. I have written about how I have gone about it, there are others who have written better stuff. Only certain types of trees are harvestable - I have posted pics here of the types that can be. If you are equipped with a harvester - then by scanning all trees harvestable ones will show as white writing on a black background. It is a pleasent change of pace activity & you gain skills.
Good luck

I one is going to be a dick its better to be a dick early on & get it out of ones system. So maybe new players have a sort of excuse for dickheaddom. It would be a sad thing to have reached Elite status & be a dick :(

GoGeek smart are comments are a fact of life - they may not even be intended that way. Forums everywhere are awash with Autism and even English as a second language. If the language irritates, just wait until you come up against smart arse actions against you in game :)

That was an interesting tip rasmadrak - I did not realise that fallen trees may be an indication of harvestable trees in the area. I will check that out next I am on Caly

Look for areas where there's a log on the ground, those usually have a lot of trees.
There are areas with no fallen logs, so I don't think it's an indicator.
At least lack of logs isn't indicator of lack of harvestable trees.

look around icarus. If you can afford to get to another planet try far upper west side of Toulan - literally an entire island or 2 there dedicated to it, but many folks are there from time to time so respawn may not be spawned when you get there.

On Calypso try going to PA mall and heading north a bit.

Time to explore 😁👍👍👍
This is very good advice.

Tree harvesting is like mining, Asking where is best to mine will get you increasingly vague answers as nobody will tell you the very best places they have found. Same with good places for trees - there are excellent places that everybody and their dog knows about - so everybody goes & harvests there.

I suspect that continued regular harvesting by lots of people of an area depresses the returns overall, and that areas that are rarely harvested give better returns (I have no proof, just feelings here).
Also, don't limit yourself to low level areas. Areas where there are particularly savage mobs can be quite safe & enjoyable to harvest if none of those high level mobs are in particular places in those areas.

Check this map out. https://www.planetcalypso.com/media/maps/1st-Place_q80.jpg It shows the areas where mobs are and their levels. Note that there are areas where there are no mobs - these are potentially good places to check out. Sadly the information can be a bit dated - but its a good place to start :)

So I have the Terratech as the first piece of hardware to cut the tree's, do i need something else to find the tree's like scan for them?

No, you see them with any tool. You just need better tools to be able to cut down the Large Tree (Lvl 2) and Huge Tree (Lvl 3) - different levels give different wood and using lower tools on higher trees produces lower wood and waste the potential. But since the trees don't have any use right now it doesn't matter. (back when they did, lvl3 were the most valuable and actually could make the whole operation profitable if you'd stick only to lvl 3 ones ignoring the rest). Nowadays, tree harvesting is only good for gaining the resource gathering skills that contribute to Looter professions and for that lvl 1 trees are as good as any.

Best place to harvest trees that I know of is on Cyrene, forget the name of teleporter but if ask around on planet someone will point you there :) .

There is also a weekly treecutting mission that rewards a random (l) bp with 20 or so clks as reward.

I think was footwall islands TP from memory.

From what I seen NI seems the best for tree cutting. There is also a daily mission and entire island with hundreds of harvestable trees in small area and also many other areas with harvestable trees.

Nice to know also :), will check out NI more some point.

Here are the best places that I have found for each planet. All of these are easily accessible and are free of mobs or only has very low level mobs, so you can harvest to your heart's content without getting mauled by angry creatures

Calypso: near Half Moon Cove, near the sand beaches up north there are some small islands with a lot of harvestable trees.

Arkadia: The whole area around Celeste Quarry is full of harvestable trees

Cyrene: the whole area east of the NGU Volcano

Toulan: Fauna & Flora center and the whole sand strip west are full of harvestable trees

ROCKtropia: in the Outer Circle of Hell, in the central-south area of the map. Second best place to harvest in-game (in my opinion :p )

Next Island: in Ancient Greece, the teleporter completely south near the Gorgon wave event. Probably the best tree harvesting area in the game!

You don't know NI well enough if you say that 😜
It's good place around Gorgon in AG, but it's even a lot better place on NI.

If setting out to do tree harvesting, here are some things I found could make your experience in this more interesting and more profitable/less costly.

1. Invest in something that increases reload speed eg Ares Ring.
2. As your skill builds you will be able to operate higher levels Terratechs. Either stick with TT ones or purchase an U model. (they wear out quickly & with L ones mark up on replacements will cost.
3. Wood is heavy, as your skill increases so the amount of harvested timber increases - to save yourself regularly returning to base to unload stockpile, purchase a vehicle. Mk1 explorers are excellent - they are cheap have a good carrying capacity & are easy to spawn & place. Their SI does not matter - as long as they can be spawned. Place a "Recall all vehicles" tag on your desktop. When you are carrying too much, transfer load to vehicle spawn it & then recall it. I have 5 of them and when I have filled & recalled them. I have 3 Terratech3s and when they are used up & have done enough harvesting .

When looking for harvestable trees, when a harvestable tree indicates. Press move to Target (Default key is F) you can then keep scanning for other harvestable trees while your av moves to and cuts selected one.

To save some time while exploring on Arkadia - you wont find Harvestable trees where vegetation is cold, arid or tropical - only in temperate areas will you find trees. Also no alien trees will be harvestable. This is different on Caly as alien trees can be & usually have the most wood :)

A question -
When using a level 1 cutter, I usually only get a few boards per small tree. Let's say, usually 1 but sometimes 2 boards per cut, where each tree is usually around 8-10 cuts . This is at 250 cuts per 5 PED purchased tool, i.e 2 PEC per cut.

Using a level 3 cutter, I get 9-10 boards per cut - but quite often get 20 boards as well.
The tool costs me 30 PED to repair, giving me 300 cuts at 10 PEC per cut.
Usually I only require a few of those 300 cuts to earn more than 0.1 PED to break even.

Would you recommend using a level 1 cutter for small trees, even though a larger number of trees need to be cut?
Or should I stick with the "more bang for the buck" version...

Looking at the numbers, I feel like level 1 for small trees should be better value - but I don't get that feeling in-game running around cutting with level 1 tools.
