The Oil Rig FAQ

Seeing as how we get questions about the oil rig from new players again and again and again, I thought I'd make an attempt to create a Sticky Thread, mainly based on the information given by various people in this specific Oil Rig thread. So here goes:

1. What is the oil rig?
   
   One of the first ingame message you will receive when you first start playing is about the oil rig and sweating, see picture below. The oil rig is a place where barrels of crude oil spawn on the ground every 7-30 minutes, in quantities of 500-1500 barrels at the time, occasionally ranging up to 1800 or even 2000 barrels. The oil is free for anyone to pick up.

2. What is crude oil and how do I pick it up?
   
   Crude oil is a type of enmatter that can be used as crafting material, and it can also be used as fuel for space ships. This means that you can sell the oil to get PED. To pick it up, right click on a barrel as shown in the picture below.

3. Where can I find the oil rig?
   
   The oil rig is situated in the middle of PvP area 2 in south east Eudoria, at coordinates X=24290 Y=8265. Press 'P' ingame to see the coordinates for your current position. The oil rig itself is rather small and looks like this:

4. What does PvP mean?
   
   PvP = Player versus Player, which means that you can kill and get killed by other players. The oil rig is frequently visited by PK:ers or Player Killers who enjoy killing other players. Sometimes these PK:ers will 'close' the oil rig which means that they take over the rig to collect the oil themselves, often shooting anyone who gets close to the rig.
   
   
   
5. Can I get robbed of my possessions by these PK:ers?
   
   The answer is no, you can't be robbed in PvP area 2. The only PvP area where you can be robbed after you've been killed is PvP area 3, situated north-northwest of PvP area 2, just south of Camp Echidna. The only possessions you can be robbed of are stackable items.
   
   
   
6. Are there other dangers at the oil rig besides the PK:ers?
   
   Yes, there are often a lot of advanced levels of Atroxes around that will do a lot of damage to you. Unless you have good armour and high level skills, these mobs will easily kill you, as illustrated in the picture below.

7. What is the best way to get to the oil rig?
   
   The nearest TP is Nymphtown, but you might find it easier to get to the oil rig running east from the TP in Twin Peaks as there are a couple of outposts on the way where you can revive. You can see the location of the TPs and outposts on map.
   
   Another, possibly easier way to get to the outpost just south west of PvP area 2 is swimming all the way from Fort Troy.
   
   You might also try getting to the oil rig by using a TP (Teleport) chip. Once you get to the outpost to the south west it's about 2-3 hops to the rig if you use a lesser TP chip and about 1 hop with a minor TP chip depending on your pshychotrophy skill. You can cut down on some of the hops by running some.

8. So are you saying it's impossible for n00bs to get oil at the oil rig?
   
   No, it's just very, very difficult. Once you are at the outpost south west of PvP area 2, talk to the players that revive there. If you ask politely, you might get useful information from them, such as if the rig is 'open' or 'closed' at the moment and also the current level of Atrox activity in the area.
   
   And if you get killed by another player inside PvP area 2, please remember that it's nothing personal.

Perhaps something about how often the oil appears, in what quantities, a picture what it looks like and instructions on picking up ground items.

I have a friend who got to the rig on his 3rd day but left because he didn't know what to do there.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to FlameDancer again.

Ouch - if only I knew the answers myself! I need to have a look around with the search function unless someone who knows could post here?

I have some limited info, I think the spawn quantity is 500-1500 crude oil, the spawn period is random but anything between 5-20 mins.

I have never seen oil spawn but I assume it looks like the normal crude oil so a picture of that would be fine.

I guess you pick it up like you would fruit or dung.

This is just from memory so it might be wrong or could have changed. If anyone has better info please do correct me.

No your right It just spawns on the floor with a number showing how much is there,

When I got some oill it was just over 10peds worth so it can be worth it if you can grab some oill, or for vets to buy cheaper oill, Ive not been there in a while recent updates have made it damn near impossible to reach it without getting chomped by an atrox

and a big with those pics sooooo many atrox thats after the latest VU

One thing I find is its much easier to get there with a TP chip, (very cheep nowdays) as you can TP over the line of atrox that often stands in your way of actually getting to the oil rig.

Closed rig means that someone has taken over the rig and collecting the oil themselves, sometimes these avies wil shoot on sight other times you may well be left alone as long as you keep your distance

Might wanna tell them about how pointless it is, lol (just kiddin)
But seriously I want there in my first few day and everytime i got close to the fields I was just killed by a group of players who had the rig shut down. SO I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon

Rotten Ice - I think I'll add a comment about using a TP chip to get there, but I need to find a link to a good guide on chips

I also need a good clear pic of an oil barrel - searched the gallery but couldn't find one. Anyone got a good pic? Otherwise I'll just upload one myself once I'm home tonight (currently posting from w*rk, shhhh!)

you might want to also add that spaceships use lots of oil and with CND being open then getting oil could be very productive.

i think the spawn is 5 -25 mins

Thanks - added info about oil also being used as fuel and not only for crafting. Will leave out the info about CND though in an attempt to keep the FAQ short.

I just keep on wondering why MA hasn't removed the oilrig as a n00b thing to do in one of the first messages newbies get

It's impossible for a orange suit to actually get close to the oilrig without an escort of an über

I think, after looking this picture, not a single newcomer wants to go there
There are atleast 2-3k dmg in sec.

Changed the spawn interval to 5-25 minutes and added info about TP chip together with a link to The Mindforce Guide

Well all players should know the truth of the OIL Ring, especially new players... still a great place to go..


But just like in Real life you might not want to climb the biggest mountain first... well you might not unless you are like me...



Maybe an little work out before you go could help..


anyways I noticed that the minium time for oil spawn is like 15-25 mins.. on average. Looks just like the crude oil, and is placed randomly on the floor next to the sprout .
Drops range from 500 to 2000 oil depending on luck.. average say is 1k to 1.5k

Wish they would remove the oil part in the welcome message.. oil rig is impossible for noobs unless there's a willing escort through the atroxes, and friendly, unselfish people at the rig.

Another extremely safe route to at leas the outpost west of the rig is to swim there from fort troy.
Wit the route form twin peaks you have to go through armax, atrax, tantillians, upper level diakiba, upper level ambulimax, bots and spiders depending on wich exact route you take.
This is just to get form TwP to the outpost west of the rig.
If dont make it practically to the doorstep of the outpost east of TwP before you die you will revive in twin peaks.
From fort troy you only have to go through low level diakiba and exarosaur as you head east to the water, then its a long, boring, but safe swim to the outpost west of the rig.

Once you get to the outpost it is about 2-3 hops to the rig if you use a lesser tp chip and about 1 hop with a miner tp chip depeniding on your pshychotrophy skill.
You can cut down on some of the hops by running some.
Usually its safe to run almost to the pvp zone and get in as far as you can before you try a tp hop, that gets ya closer and gives ya a better chance of hopping over the trox.
It is this outpost too that you will revive if you are killed at the rig.
So if you hang out there you can get a small idea of what kinda folks are at the rig by talking with whoever revives and by seeing who revives.
If your ask nicely its possable to find out all kinds of things like who is at the rig now, if its open or closed, even what weapons your competion is carryign and even a kidna weather report on trox activity. Info that cane help in determining if you wanna bother wading through trox or buring ME to tp to the rig.

Oil drops

Haven't been at the rig since the last major VU, but for what I know the drop time is in the 7-30mins range (verified!) and the quantities range should be 500-1500 oil (which means 5-15PED per drop, verified!).
I've also heard reports that the quantity ranges up to 18ped, but can't confirm this.

Good work! And don't forget to drop a line about being nice and polite: if somebody kills you at the rig, it's nothing personal! Most of the times, when you've got killed you once, no more ammo will be wasted on you by the same player... well, that is if you're not behaving like a n00b!

How about if I sort of combine the info like this:

indeed, gaining the ability to read Genius' words is the main reason for which I'd like to understant ethereal soul language! (read dead's phrases instead of oOooOOoooOOOooOoo... )

Ooops, forgot to ask permission - good thing you're OK with it!

The oil rig is so hard to get into, such a waste of ammo on the mobs and on the people around you, it's probably cheaper to just mine the oil than to get a chance of getting any at oil rig.

heh you can try to get there 20 times..if you get 1000 oil then it was worth it I guess but don't get stuck at the outpost..always have a backup or a friend

Intervals

Oil drops with an average interval of 15 minutes. I have seen intervals of 5 seconds up to 30 minutes, although in the case of the 5 seconds I cannot be sure someone "faked" a drop by dropping oil himself (both drops were in the range of 500 - 1500 oil). It's amazing how naive some people can be to drop it expecting they will be the first to pick it up again. On the other hand, if the interval seems to be 30 minutes or more, you can start to wonder if you havent missed one drop.

Anyway, if you manage to stay around for an hour, you can expect 4 drops.

Personally I do not believe there have been drops of more than 1499 barrels, at least not in the last 2 years. I do know that sometimes people mistakenly drop a big amount of oil themselves (and lose it because someone else picks it up and says "hey that was a superdrop of 18xx").

Some people keep dead avatars at the rig so they can get some advanced intelligence as to who and what is currently at the rig.
Also socs might have a dead avatar there and use someone who has skype, teamspeak or other out-of-band communication to get an up to the minute report on whats is at the rig.
This can help them on knowing when to come to the rig, when a good time to close it would be and how many members to put in a raid team.
It also will help to know exactly what weapons thier opponents are using.
In this way someone can log in to ther dead avatar at the rig and realise that skalman is there ownign the rig with his imk2 and know not to show up yet. Later on they cna check and see that only a bunch of orange suits are in and they can then TP in with a jungle stalker and close it.
Another reason for dead avvies always there is that the rig at times can be an entertainging place to be. If you have a carefully positioned avatar there dead you have a way of watching all the action that practically is a ringside seat.
IF any of the friends of this avatar are at the rig and knows hot to speak ghost language then even chatting is possable, and it would be semi-private chatting.

Also the outposts that are around the rig are easy to get out of.
The outpost that is the closest to PVP2 is easy a mong the easiest outposts to get out of. just head south, very soon you hit water, iwhen yo hit water yourhome free.
The outpost that is between pvp2 and twin peaks, just head as far west as you can, you wont have to go far til you would revive in twin peaks.
The outpost between nymphtown and pvp2, just follow the edge of the lake until you get to nymphtown. If argonauts are in the way, go around them or take the long way around the lake, or you can try swimming around the ripper snappers.
