Hello there,
a discussion here on the forum made me search high and low for ways to know you actual ingame FPS (Frames per Second) alternative to using Fraps.

The search conducted me to two useful third party tools that, amongst many others, also have this function: ATI Tray Tool and nVidia Tray Tool.

Since I don't have an ATI-based computer available right now I'll describe the latter, but the configuration of the first one shouldn't be much different.
If you want to try and give me some screenshots, please go ahead: I'll be happy to update this post!

nVidia Tray Tool
The download and installation of NVTray is quite straight forward (just note that you'll need Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 installed (x86, x64, IA64) for it to work).
I downloaded the NVTray 1051 Beta 4 (x86, x64) version, because the Flash On Screen Display code, written by ATI Tray Tool's author, is not yet available in the stable release.

After the download and the installation we'll have a new icon sitting in our systray, with a comfortable right-click menu for various settings:
nvtray_icon.jpg

Double click the icon, and NVTweak opens. Choose the Settings menu -> Preferences and switch to the OSD Settings tab:
nvtweak_prefs.jpg

As you can see, the basic configuration is pretty forward but rather complete: you can select on which corner to draw the informations (Bottom Left in my example), what informations to draw (FPS Counter, speeds, temperatures, memory, etc) and the informations' update rate.

Done those basic settings, you can launch Entropia Universe and look at your system's performances in real time!

And it also works in windowed mode too!

Have fun!

NOTE: PEAss worked fine while in fullscreen mode, but haven't tested it using windowed mode, since that was out of the purposes of this article. Feel free to post your experiences.
P.S.: I haven't touched any of the other available settings, for it wasn't the reason of this quick article. Feel free to do it and experiment

ATI Tray Tool
Thanks to Meric for testing it out and providing the configuration screenshots!
Thanks to Miller for providing the ingame screenshots, with an enviable framerate too!

Right click the icon, select Tools & Options -> OnScreen Display:

Being based on the same code, the configuration of the OSD of NVTweak is pretty similar to this one, so I won't go into more details... You've got the same options: where to draw the informations (Bottom Left in the example), the informations' update rate, etc...

Done those basic settings, you can launch Entropia Universe and look at your system's performances in real time!

Solid info man, thanks!

+ rep

Nice find on the Nvidia tweak! + rep from me too. Forgot to even look there.
I use Fraps for screenshots, which has a built in FPS counter, but it shows it on the upper left of the screen (not a good area for EU! ). Will set mine up as soon as I get home.

Update...

Hey guys,
glad it was helping, even only a small portion of the users...

I'm now into the 4th day using the nVidia Tray Tools and, even tho it's still a beta, I found it pretty stable...
From time to time I get some .NET framework unhandled exceptions, but just clicking on Continue instead of Exit keeps it running smoothly...
I've mailed the author with those exceptions, just in case, and still waiting for an answer :p

Please note that those exceptions has never happened while ingame playing, but for example while tweaking the configuration, or when my screensaver pops up, etc...

Have fun and thanks for the +reps!

BUMP :smash:

Nobody with an ATI card wants to test this out and maybe provide some screenies?! :)

I'll have a go later on tonight. I installed the ATI version and the FPS figure appeared. Very easy really!

Harry.

Having created some screen grabs I went to the Graphical FAQ to see about posting them. It said I wasn't allowed to access it, so perhaps I'm to much of a newbie to do this.

I still have the grabs, so if anybody can suggest a way out I'd be grateful.

Check your PMs :)

I think (ha!) I've figured it out! First the menu when you right click the icon:

Second the Panel for the OSD:

Otherwise the instructions given are spot on!

Bump :smash: for I've just updated the second post (ATI Tray Tools' one) with the info provided by Meric!
Thanks!

I've just tested the ATI Tray Tool Thing Program and can confirm it works smoothly in both windowed mode and full screen :)

Nice customisable little program, going to see if I can make it work using the screen on my keyboard :wtg:

In windowed mode:

In full-screen mode:

Bump :smash: for the screenshots in the second post (ATI Tray Tools' one) provided by Miller!
Thanks mate, +rep!

No worries mate, I have my uses - occasionally

And saves me from continuing my fight to get screen shots in full screen mode!

:scratch2:
