CBC News: Loot box brouhaha: Are video games becoming too much like gambling? http://google.com/newsstand/s/CBIw3Lykjzo

Entropia isn't mentioned but it might well have been and definitely close to the truth

While i understand the hatred people have about loot boxes in games you have paid for, when it comes to free to play games, they do need to make money somehow to continue running the servers and doing maintenance, etc.

Since Entropia is considered a free to play game (although we all know that generally you have to pay something at some point), having them is one way they can continue to keep the servers going (not sure about the whole maintenance though since we have so much lag).

What that article seems to lean towards is that loot boxes in other games have become a "pay to win" scenario, where as you will lose unless you have whatever is in the loot box. In Entropia, it doesn't seem to fit that. Sure some of the items are great and worth a bit of money...but do they make you win in the game? will you be in tt profit constantly with those items? Maybe earlier before loot 2.0 with the buffs and rings, etc, but now? unlikely.
You may do better than the average person with them, but it doesn't mean you will automatically start winning the game.

Many people buy the boxes simply because they were going to deposit anyway and figure a chance at looting a ring is worth it. It does seem like they are going a bit too far by having a weapon in the box this time though, maybe they should stick to accessories or even a new vehicle, etc.
