So mining has now been out for a week and wanted to share some information more broadly as a centralized place to store information and get some collaboration going.

Mining Laser Type

There are currently two different types of Mining Laser in the game, Attached and Mounted.

Attached can be dragged onto Quads, Slepnirs and other ships such as Firebird, Equus and replace what would be your main pilot gun (like a kismet light laser). Attached lasers do not benefit from rings, buffs or other effects which impact player damage.
Mounted lasers are equippable while in a seat, i.e. the passenger seat of a quad, or a miner seat in a prospector, each mounted laser also comes with a 'debuff' it applies to an asteroid which I'll go into more detail below. Mounted lasers do benefit from rings, buffs and other effects.

The following Mining lasers fall into the following categories and have their own SIB progressions that alternate between Genesis and Kismet types through to the current max tier around Lv90 Mining Laser.

AttachedMounted
Genesis Star IvaldiGenesis Star Sindri
Kismet SimurghKismet Chamrosh
Genesis Star Etri (High Power)
IMO Orion (High Power)

A final note that Genesis Star mining lasers consume explosive projectiles, while Kismet ones consume Weapon Cells or Universal Ammo.

Asteroids & Protection

I've started to capture Asteroid stats on my mining laser spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Txn455B1oxdNcbmJJrPCf127zXOorUFEJ3guJbC03Q/edit, let me know if you have values you've tested and want to add and I'll get those added in.

Asteroids have 4 distinct types:

C-Type:
The most common type of asteroid, the C-type asteroids are so named because they contain relatively high amounts of carbon. Consisting mainly of clay and rocks, they do not stand out much visually, and are the easiest to break
C Loots: Iron. Belkar, Lysterium, Narcanisum. Copper, Azzurdie, Megan, Blazar, Tailings, Vesperdite

S-Type:
The fairly common S-type is so named because of their silicate composition, consisting mainly of silicate materials and nickel-iron. They can be easily identified by the crystalline structure which jut out from the rocky core.
S Loots: More testing needed

M-Type:
The M-type are dense and durable asteroids with high concentrations of heavy metals, making them a difficult nut to crack. They are rare in this region of space, only found near the Howling Mine. These characteristics make them the most difficult asteroid to mine, but they are still highly sought after for being the only source of the ultra-rare Scottium mineral, crucial to long-range teleportation technology.
M Loots: Lanorium, Narcanisum, Durulium, Terrudite, Scottium, Ignisium, Gold, Cobalt, Tailings

F-Type:
These asteroids are a subtype of the C-type, consisting mainly of frozen fluids and gases. Prospectors can easily tell the F-type apart from other C-types by the meandering bluish veins that score their surface.
F Loots: More testing needed

M-Type asteroids are unique in that they are only found in the lootable PvP area around Howling Mine. All other asteroids can be found throughout space, C-Type level I asteroids are common immediately outside of most Space Stations, and as you progress further afield, you can find bigger asteroids of different types.

Every asteroid above a C-Type Level I has some amount of protection to mining laser damage which needs to be overcome through either the use of mounted mining lasers, or by doing enough damage to offset it.

The debuffs that mounted lasers currently apply is bugged but the actual stats was shared by morax on discord:

Kismet Chamrosh V1 (L)0.5
Genesis Star Sindri I (L)0.8
Kismet Chamrosh V2 (L)0.8
Genesis Star Sindri II (L)1.1
Kismet Chamrosh V3 (L)1.1
Genesis Star Sindri III (L)1.4
Kismet Chamrosh V4 (L)1.4
Genesis Star Sindri IV (L)1.7
Kismet Chamrosh V5 (L)1.7
Genesis Star Sindri V (L)2
Genesis Star Eitri 100 (L)1.5
Genesis Star Eitri 200 (L)2
IMO Orion Minor (L)2.3
IMO Orion Major (L)2.5

This table shows the amount of protection each stack of the debuff (up to a maximum of 10 stacks) offsets. So a Sindri V at 10 stacks, offsets a total of 20 protection on the asteroid.

Note: The debuff only cares which mining lasers applied the first hit, so if you're mining solo or in a group, it matters who, or what laser, applies the first mounted debuff. As an example if Player A shoots first with a Sindri V and Player B shoots afterwards with a Sindri I, at 10 stacks the protection reduction will be 20. However, if these were reversed, and player B shoots first, at 10 stacks the protection debuff would only be 8.

For a simplified calculation, take an asteroid with 3000 hp, and 5 points of protection, if we assume that mining lasers have 3 dpp we can look at the following cases:
  • Attached Mining Laser 1: 10-20 damage
  • Mounted Mining Laser 1: 5-15 damage, but 0.5 protection reduction per stack of the debuff.
Over the course of destroying the asteroid (and ignoring things like the first 10 shots of the mounted laser and any effect rings or buffs have), the attached mining laser will have its damage reduced by 5 each shot, turning its damage from 10-20 to 5-15. This is a 25% reduction of its effective damage, meaning that instead of costing 10 ped to destroy the asteroid, it will take the attached mining laser 13.3 ped instead. As the mounted mining laser fully removes the protection, it gets to use its maximum damage range, costing 10 ped to destroy the asteroid.

As the players kill-efficiency directly correlates to what loot they get back, a higher kill cost gives more shrapnel and a too high kill cost ensures that no ores will be looted at all. An exception to this is tailings which can still appear even when doing very inefficient kills.

This means that it becomes important to use higher level mining lasers as you move to bigger asteroids with higher protection values to minimize kill cost and reduce the amount of shrapnel returned in loot.

Tips & Tricks

Skill faster with bigger TT input
This one should be pretty self explanatory to anyone who's done a huge amount of skilling in-game, more TT spend = faster skill gains. Given the way that efficiency works, its entirely possible that using a big laser you don't have the skills for (as an example I tried out using a Simurgh V5 on big M asteroids) and found that because even with 0.5x DPP through not being within SIB, i still got ores from the asteroids due to offsetting so much protection through massive hits. Also, don't forget the skill pills!

Bigger Asteroids =/= faster skill gains
What seems to be most important for skilling is uptime on your mining laser, there doesn't appear to be a significant 'kill bonus' for mining like we see in hunting, so the difference between large and small asteroids for skilling Hit and Dmg is negligible, though minimizing the time flying between asteroids is pretty important!

Efficient Mining is a team sport
This is especially true for anyone using an attached laser, you need to have someone else using a mounted one to fully max out the usefulness of your laser. One person in a quad with another using a mounted laser is peak efficiency.

Swapping between mounted lasers for better debuffs
As covered above, you can swap between higher tier mounted lasers while solo or in a team to take advantage of a higher debuff to the asteroids protection, only the first shot matters so you don't need to excessively decay those lasers until you're in the SIB range to make use of their damage.

Mine Solo In a team
As all asteroids are shared loot (and they autoloot) you don't need to be worried about mining in a team alone, this way you can use the team tagging method to keep track of which asteroid you want to fly to next. As a useful tip, you can bind the action "Set Team Target" to another key or mouse button to make it easier to tag.

Codex & Skills

Aeolus started to put some information together on this thread: https://www.planetcalypsoforum.com/...s/mining-laser-skills-and-professions.304024/ which highlights what skills are available for Mining professions in space and what percentage contribution those skills have.

There are four new professions added:
  • Minable Looter (Untested but assuming a similar contribution to returns that hunting looter has)
  • Mining Laser (Hit)
  • Mining Laser (Dmg)
  • Mining Laser Engineer - Currently used for crafting mining lasers, though most blueprints I've seen so far have been Level 6 and required 12.5 to 17.5 only.
Current discovered hidden skills unlock at:
  • Minable Looter Level 30 - Benefacting
  • Mining Laser Hit / Dmg 20 - Integrity Analysis
  • Mining Laser Hit / Dmg 20 - Thermal Drilling
  • Mining Hit / Dmg 45 - Fracturing
Each type of asteroid (C, S, F, and M) has its own Codex and rewards are different depending on the base size of the level 1 asteroid. As people provide different codex rank rewards, I can fill in the table below.

Reserving a post just incase we need to fit in more space, but that's enough typing for now!

Thank you for all the info

oh and also forC asteroid

Thanks for sharing the info!

Incredible data and presentation.

Do any mining lasers damage other ships? Asking for defensive purposes of course
Don't think they do, was one guy earlier who complained that he was defenseless when npc pirates showed up, when he was out mining. Wondered if it was possible to switch turrets. So it seems he couldn't do much against them with his mining laser.

Well maybe attached mining lasers can damage other ships but mounted mining lasers can't. Does anyone know?
Attached mining lasers do not damage other ships, only kismet lasers attached to ships like quads or, mounted ones such as a porcupine can be used for defense from pirates / PvE

What about mounted mining lasers?
No, all the new mining lasers do a special damage type called "Mining laser damage" which seems to be a different damage type specific to asteroid mining. No mining laser mounted or attached can damage a ship as far as I have seen.

Thanks! The pioneer better get a weapon better than the pioneer c.i.w.s. MK1 because it only has a range of 180 and the very cheap kismet light laser for any quad has a range of 260, if there's only one person in a pioneer any quad can kill one by staying out of range atm. It doesn't really matter because I can convert shrapnel if I get it huge HoF or ATH and no one can loot it. I converted the shrapnel from my 200 ped asteroid last night to uni ammo right in my pioneer last night, no problem

One thing is sure - Nana is one of the most helpful players when it comes to providing information, strategies and software related to Entropia.
It's nice to see someone who shares additional knowledge with the rest of Entropia.
Thank you for all your help :)(y)

to answer my own question, I don't think the limited pioneer is able to warp. I've read that you drag warp drives somewhere on vehicle info where it turns green in a slot, the pioneer doesn't have that, I bought a cheap sub warp drive (whatever that is), didn't interact anywhere or attach.

Can you please tell me how many tasks I need to complete and what type and number of ingredients I need to submit? Thank you. [Pioneer (L)]

Just a clarification, The effective damage is actually reduced from 15 average to 10 average which is a 33% reduction and will cost 50% more to destroy.

What can we do with tailings?
