I've observed an awful lot of silly revenge repping etc going on within the confines of EF lately and I would like to propose an adjustment on how people gain rep - either way.

Firstly, I would propose the replacing of the Add Reputation button with the following:

Was this post informative? Yes

Secondly would be to either remove neg repping or base it on when someone reports a post to a moderator.

This would weed out the unecessary neg reps leaving neg reps to do with grievances with a particular post. (whether someone was abusive etc.)

If someone has incorrect facts I don't see this as a means to give them negative rep, kindly inform the person of the facts. If a post contains improper material, abusive language, personal attacks, links to hacks and cracks etc then this should be 'moderated' in some way and hence deserve negative reputation.

Interested to know the thoughts of others on this.

regards,

Disagree with ya dude so for that you get a - rep LOL

Joking pal, I like it, gives them value again rather than them being overused. Unfortunately, sometimes people will get hammered with - reps just for having an opinion, even though they expressed it politely

Get the system in place and you'll get your + rep LOL

lol.

I added a poll on this now also.

I don't see how your suggestion would improve things. The "usefull" post idea can be abused just like the +rep can be abused. Neg reps, well im neva been a big fan of it, and neva deal them out as i don't see the point, but its the opposite of the +rep. Ofcourse it can be abuse as well, but thats no difference then +rep.

If you keep getting certain -rep, I would think there is a reason for that. Yes there a childish ppl, and ppl using it for other reason ( see your post in the rules topic ). Not everything is deserved, but it does happen to certain people cause not all people have problems with abuse of -rep or +rep.

I'd say keep it as it is. I havent though about it to much, so I don't have other idea's but I certainly don't see yours as an improvement, atleast what i understand of it.

I wasn't saying that I receive loads of revenge reps, I have had one today and I hear of it happening through other people frequently.

I understand that it could still be abused using the informative posts link but in changing it's emphasis it might make people realise what the rep system is here for and thus reduce the abuse.

If I mentioned "you" I ment the reader of my topic and not specifically you in person Akiran. Though when you read it, i guess i did mean you, but not when another reads it. It wasnt ment that personal. I just read your otherpost and this one directly after each other and it had a nice example. I apologize that it might have been taking to personal.

The reason I dont think it would work is cause the +rep ( in your case the 'useful' link ) needs an equal counterpart. For good to exists there must be evil and more of that blah blah.

That's ok no worries, I didn't take it personally, just wanted to clarify my position.

Yes, I understand that, however, when you see bloggy type sites or sites with a review section often you see only the ability to say yes. Or give a rating in stars but no definitive negative. I was thinking this would work better as those that contribute informative or constructive criticism posts receive reputation for being a serious contributor to the community in what they say. Those that do not are neutral, and unfortunately this gets translated by many as negative when really that shouldn't be the case.

Negatives, if I'm not mistaken should be for abuse etc. Things that you 'Report to Moderator' typically (if you are conscientious poster.) If someone has their facts mixed up that should not be rewarded with a neg rep imo.

Anyhow, I thought I'd put it in a slightly more informative light, but of course, it's your opinion to want the neg reps so fair enough ;) I don't want exhaust this thread with a to and fro on each others opinions on this.

Thanks for your input into the discussion, it's interesting to know how people perceive the rep system.

I also agree that the -rep does serve a purpose even if it's abused. Maybe it could be possible to report a 'bad' -rep to a moderator and have it removed or the offender cautioned for abusing the system. But then again the mods probably have enough to do already...

I thought about that and came to the conclusion that all this would do is make more work for our already busy moderators. Hence the solution I put forward would actually make for less work and get people using the 'Report to Moderator' button more effectively. But yes, this is an alternative.

I think the rep system is fine but open to abuse, there may be another way of doing rep, look at the site in my sig and you will see how it is done there (although it is not finished yet), whatever rep is given it is publicly viewable by everybody and the next to the rep and the reason is the name of the person who gave it, so if u r gonna -rep some1 your theoretically gonna make sure you have a valid reason or every1 will see, well you get the idea...

rep system is ok. flaming is something that it's been used for but shouldn't be so.

Bump for more opinion, if anyone cares.

Personally I like it as it is now, You get little "rep conversations" which are pretty cool. Sure you get the kids doing the old negs for kicks but thats a part of it.

Perhaps your sugestion could be an extention to the rep system by adding a "posts that were usefull" counter, Although i suggested that a while ago, Dont recall what was said about it.
