We are super excited to introduce a feature that heralds the debut of the Entropia Universe AI President System. In a future release, we are starting with two new AI-driven Non-Player Characters (NPCs) crafted to enrich the experience for newcomers. These intelligent, human-like, and interactive NPCs will guide users through some of the fundamental aspects of Entropia Universe, offering essential hints and personalized guidance to integrate newcomers seamlessly into the universe.

Meet Our AI NPCs

Sarah Tergus

Sarah Tergus:

Stationed in Thule, Sarah is a CDF support personnel who will guide beginners through the tutorial experience, UI mechanics, keybindings, and basic game actions.

Jax Terron

Jax Terron:

Located on the second floor outside the main facility at Camp Icarus, he is a battle-hardened senior CDF support personnel trained to focus on more in-depth guidance around Camp Icarus. He can offer tips and tricks for beginners and give suggestions.

Both NPCs can hold a whole conversation about any topic they deem interesting. However, their answers might vary depending on their focus and personal goals.

Purpose And Future Plans

Our primary goal in introducing these Immersive NPCs is to provide beginners with friendly initial guidance and help users smoothly navigate the game's early stages by presenting information in a clearer and easier-to-understand way.

These NPCs will complement the rich community engagement cornerstone of the Entropia Universe experience while maintaining the valuable game insights and strategies best acquired through traditional gameplay and interaction with our vibrant community.

In the future release, we will focus on aiding new players and we are planning future updates to expand the scope of support these NPCs offer. We’re aiming for upcoming versions to include NPCs tailored to meet the needs of current and advanced players, offering specialized advice and deeper insights into more complex aspects of the game.

Interaction

Our Immersive NPCs utilize the latest in LLM-based AI technology. Large language models (LLM) are very large deep learning models that are pre-trained on vast amounts of data. LLM is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) transformer model that can recognize and generate text, among other tasks. Like all new AI technologies, this LLM-AI does not guarantee 100% accuracy in responses.

However, our goal with these NPCs is to create an immersive experience. To enhance this experience, we have designed these NPCs to mirror interactions you might have with a real person, and just like when talking to other people the responses may vary in reliability. This helps make them into something more than just a talking encyclopedia.

Memory and Personalization

Our Immersive NPCs are designed with short- and long-term memory capabilities. The short-term memory capabilities give the NPCs a human-like experience, where they don’t remember past interactions perfectly, enhancing the personal touch during interactions. The long-term memory feature allows the NPCs to remember your previous conversations and pick up where you left off.

Privacy and Data Use

We hold your privacy in the highest regard. Our AI NPCs are designed to enhance your gaming experience without compromising your personal security. These NPCs will access only non-sensitive data such as your avatar name and a basic assessment of your strength level. This information is used solely to tailor interactions to your current experience within the game.

It's important to note that while AI NPC responses are generated through advanced third-party inference engines, we at MindArk do not send your e-mail address or similar information to these systems. We adhere strictly to data privacy laws and guidelines to ensure your information is protected.

As a precaution and in line with best practices for online interactions, we urge you to never share personal information with AI NPCs, just as you would refrain from sharing personal details in the in-game chat. Always consider any information you share in the game as potentially public, and avoid disclosing sensitive personal data during gameplay.

We are committed to continuously improving these systems to ensure they respect user privacy while providing a valuable, engaging experience in Entropia Universe.

This release marks the early stages of our AI NPCs, and we are committed to continuous improvements after this initial release. This includes enhancing response times, in-game capabilities, and the ability to discuss more complex topics.

We are super excited to introduce this feature that heralds the debut of the Entropia Universe AI President System, and we believe the AI NPC’s will significantly enrich the player experience. We value your feedback and look forward to evolving these features based on your interactions and suggestions.

Take it one step further make in game menu/hot key click that opens up chat with npc.
Feed it entropia wiki so next time i can just ask "tell me DMG type of xyz mob" and it replies from wiki etc

I've been thinking for a while about making a forum post suggesting MA to implement AI NPCs. Seems unnecessary to do that post now :)
Hmm to be able to meet Sarah in Thule I need to get more disciples. I think a mentor may return to Thule at a certain skill level

Why entropia wiki. It could get access to database of in-game items all their stats so we could ask it to say exact stats of any item discovered and compare with other items plus maybe get an item link clickable in-game.
I do agree it should be a menu option not a npc u go to so you could talk to it while doing other things.

If peeps want to get an idea of what is possible, there's a demo set in New York where you can talk to people walking by. They have different beliefs, knowledge, moods etc., even down to the concept of knowing they are virtual life forms - or not.
Now that the basic training can have a very large amount of 'personalised' info added later, including a specific knowledge set and memory of previous conversations (as mentioned in the OP), various NPCs can be easily generated to either know particular stuff or not.

The data for this can also be kept on the localised database running the chats, and does not require a huge amount of memory.
An interesting angle might be whether you have to build a relationship with each NPC, or whether there is any shared data from past chats, as in "Ah, yes, I've heard about your conversation with xyz".

It is those specific data files that can be played with, as well as potentially other fixed NPC settings of generosity, politeness etc.
Fun times that can provide a GENUINE boost to player experiences, including whatever reputations you may build in different parts of the universe...

One big problem will of course be to understand what the NPCs say.
Turn on 'Avatar Chat Chatter' in the Sound options and you'll hear what Entropian sounds like :geek:

What data are these things going to be trained on exactly? I mean is this customized to a specific knowledgebase of data or is it basically just a direct insertion of chatgpt's api?

I'm very interested to see the application of this tech. A lot of game devs are trying to crack the code of AI implementation but none have done a very good job with it yet. Most just drop in chatgpt and claim they are doing something grand.

To be honest, this is a good step in the right direction, eventually, I hope leading to a more immersive gameplay environment the likes of the Replica Smart NPCs -> https://www.replicastudios.com/blog/smart-npc-plugin-release

It seems from this preview that they're just NPCs that stand there and have conversations but they'd be a lot better utilized as Pets that you can summon and talk to, like C3PO or R2D2 where you can have these conversations with the LLM about Entropia Universe from anywhere instead of having to travel to certain locations to talk to them (unless you're trying to force gameplay to certain locations).

Do they give out general info about the game or will it be more personalised? I mean questions like "Can I use <this> with <that>?" would give different answers for different players.

Then again I don't know how this AI-thing should work at all looking at MindArk's policy regarding "we don't tell you how this game works". Will exploits be shared anywhere?

I mean general AIs have been e.g. fooled to generate working Windows license keys or became racists. I doubt that's something that should find its way into EU, but it probably can't be avoided.

OK between the sit and lay gesture return... this warrants a login to check it out... wonder how popular they will be.

As an aside though, while I appreciate this was probably a "quick job" implementation largely as a a test and a way to divert support away from needing humans (they are targeting the newbie areas I note) I should say that better options are available and it would be good if MA would consider inworld.ai as they have voice and the ability to do emotes and are damn good at it too (I believe some of their examples are for 3D worlds where the avatar movements are controlled).

I was trying one of their characters (Adi) and having her read one my stories the other day. It was a dialogue scene where two characters make jokes and mock another character who desperately tries to convince them of their motives and it absolutely NAILED the tones and manner of speaking.

For me, it was another one of those "wow" moments for AI.... they just on keep coming!

There are lots of characters in the showcase but I rather enjoy Ellie since she's so sarcastic XD

One of the things AI chats seem to get consistently wrong is inference from what they themselves claim.
You can ask two associated questions, but they don't get the connection and can give inconsistent answers. If you question them more closely they can 'realise' and give the correct answer. That's also interesting, because they have to choose which of their initial answers to go with as being correct, and then go with that to correct the inconsistency of the second answer.

Still, in my last two 'deeper' conversations, one was at a conference, the other was with an AI. Both conversation partners were, let's say, flawed, :p, but both showed a high degree of interaction and focus, and at several levels I'd not be able to tell from the transcripts who had been the human. Yes, there were tell-tale signs apart from the above, but the AIs are already pretty remarkable in my opinion.

I would be great to have a (fictional) VPN mode, where you could choose to ask questions without the A.I. remembering anything/personalizing responses beyond the scope of the individual conversation.

the biggest issue with current "AIs" is that they dont know when the info they give is incorrect. they dont have any concept of what is true and what isnt. they will claim certain things with 100% certainty that are absolutely and completely incorrect. which means you need to have the answer to the question before asking the question to know if the answer is correct. and then, why even bother asking at all?

if i ask chatGPT specific things about games, movies, or whatever, id say that easily >50% of the answers are incorrect. which renders the whole system useless

Sounds interesting..
I have seen many people use AI and filters to promote or pretend in Entropia Universe not unlike in social media world such as streaming and many platforms and completely use PCF.

I must say, I have bought stock in NVDA and it was not cheap irl.

So, carry on but if you effect my loot and etc..I shall say so .

So if MA are using chatGPT. It has something in the API called "refinements". I've not used it myself but my understanding is that it can be used to provide custom training data. Not sure what form this takes but it might be something like question and answer or maybe just a set a facts or info.

In theory if MA are using this, then we should get fairly good results. The danger is if they throw in their back catalogue of support QnA and teach it to only say "I've passed this on to the development team" XD

Inworld.ai support that and it works really well. On PC if you don't use headphones it will "hear itself" and you will have to keep muting the mic. On a mobile phone though it works flawlessly. You can just have the phone on a desk and chat away to it no problem. Link above if you want to try.

Not sure MA will go voice route though... historically it hasn't been popular. Most prefer text.

It won't.... if anything the money saved on support should increase the cash floating around. If they use chatGPT, the API is cheap. Also it has a feature where you can record an ID (not necessarily a recognisable Entropia ID mind you - MA state they'll be anonymising that side of things) against each convo of the user. This is how there can be an element of personalisation. It also means that folks will hopefully behave themselves when chatting to the NPCs and not get up to anything unsavoury.

It will be interesting to see how it responds to stuff like questions about how bombs (ok I guess it is all probes now) work though.... or explosive projectiles or rocket launchers.... or even wormholes...

MA will need to be fairly careful with their training to ensure the NPC's don't get confused between reality and in game concepts.

Incidentally I couldn't find the NPC at Camp Icarus. I guess they didn't turn it on yet?

Jax Terron is AWOL - he's not there yet, probably is still in the finals steps of preparation and I expect would show up for work with the next downtime or VU. Let's see.
