Massive Incorporated Expands Into Another World As Leading Virtual Universe, Project Entropia, Joins the Network

Press release: Thursday March 16, 8:00 am ET

LONDON AND GOTHENBURG, Sweden, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The creators of the vastly popular multiplayer online game, Project Entropia, and Massive Incorporated have announced plans to bring this top title into the Massive Network, the leading network for dynamic in-game advertising.

Project Entropia, created by MindArk, was launched in 2003 and draws over 385,000 registered users. One of the unique features of this MMORPG is that it supports sales of virtual products that have an actual cash value within its real economy. A space resort within the Project Entropia universe sold for over $100,000, a certified world record. In 2005 the GNP within Project Entropia was $165,000,000 and the expected GNP for 2006 is $350,000,000.

As a result of the partnership with Massive, the colonists of Planet Calypso will be able to see real world advertising within their virtual world of Project Entropia.

"Project Entropia is a large, virtual game universe with a broad, global player base and an innovative economic model," said Nicholas Longano, CMO of Massive. "The addition of MindArk and this unique game to the Massive Network further expands the reach of this new media form and the range of in-game opportunities we can offer advertisers."

"The members of Project Entropia are regular visitors, who spend many hours in their virtual world which is built on real world economic principles. The addition of real world advertising within this virtual economy is a perfect marriage to us. We chose to work with Massive as they have the most experience integrating and delivering advertising that adds to the virtual
universe and to the participant's experiences," said Jan Welter, CEO of MindArk.

Massive pioneered dynamic in-game advertising with the launch of the Massive Network in October 2004, and has since partnered with more than 60 blue-chip advertisers to seamlessly deliver ads into more than 50 million game sessions. Massive enables publishers and developers to capture significant new revenues through the aggregation of the video game audience which can be more effectively marketed to advertisers. Developers are able to integrate real-world ad campaigns that are timely and enhance the game environment with more realism.

Great ... more lag!

Will all those who said they would leave when advertising comes, please PM me to arrange transfer of their kit :D

Yay, great news.

I hope MA will make tons of money of the commercials, so they don't need our money anymore.

Heck, theoretically if they make enough commercial money, they could actually PAY US to participate in their virtual universe. :wise:

Ehm... Well, I said theoretically.

Great ... more loot! :D :D :D

The negative aspects could be hight prices in auction though...

My life is full of advertising every where I go. Now, it is in my online life too.

yay.

Any clue about when it will begin?

if you have them in real life, learn to ignore them as everyone does :D
so will it be ingame, but 1 difference :wise:
MORE LOOT :dunce:
let's celebrate hehe

oooook before people start whineing (too later it seems lol) about the in game adverts mindark said if you read the VU realses that you will be able to turn off the advert if you like and resive loots at the normal level again.

Personaly i think this is a great idea and am looking foward tos ee the adverts and better loot.

Ill celebrate when I get more loot, not when told Im getting more loot :)

was told I would be getting more loot when we got more players... seems Im a bit on the (-) side since CND traffic started arriving...

but either way, still good news....now to see if it delivers.

Well, i want more loot so if u want to have it like it is now (no loot, no loot, no loot, 20 pecs) then just turn it off and stop the whining! :D

Gimmie it tomorrow!!!

hehe, kinda like mining...you can chose not to use mining amps, but you will get less loots than before mining amps came into the game :)

turn it off, get "average loots" .... i guess i'll leave it on.

Umm... yay?

Whateva, as long as it eliminates regular deposits, i guess i won't mind.. for now

Hehe I will look on commercials if that means i get better loot I will look and listen all day long :)

I want to see little gold piles in the loot window, I want to see nicely sharp colored ads that inspire brand trust, bring it on!

wooohooo its coming......I cant wait to loot free fries with my fine wool and hide.....

Future advertising system trial
You may have seen the large Hall of Fame entries recently. These have in no way changed the number or the value of lower end loots. A new system is in development, which will enable us to distribute revenues generated by ingame advertising to the colonists of Calypso. To make things interesting this revenue will generate higher level HoF-entries such as the ones seen lately. Ingame advertising will be introduced within a few VU's and the testing of the addon looting system is ongoing in Project Entropia and will remain in place until the advertising system is fully operational. Anyone who wish will have the opportunity to disable the advertising feature, this action will result in the colonist receives normal loot levels as before.

Small correction, they indeed said you would have an option to turn the adds off. But turning them off gives you the same average loot you receive now, not less. Turning the adds on will give you bigger loots.

It's not all good...
You are kinda forced to watch the advertisement or you suffer of financial punishment.
And i dont like spam...they brainwash you to become a zombie obsessive customer....Everywhere you go IRL you can see spam....Internet too . I think PE was the last place (before Entropian came) without advertisement ...
Do you consider the big boards of "The Entropian" on the deluxe centers as advertising or not? If so, can you choose to not display them?
Obviously not ....I am afraid that Massive wont invest in PE unless they know they can show their customer's ads to everyone ...

Besides that:
More loot if you watch the ads?
Less loot if you refuse them?

->
MA can definitely control your personal % return of loots...You are not paranoid, they probably cut your % loot down :D

ok, let me get my head around this....

Project Entropia will soon have hundreds of new bugs introduced, along with perhaps in-game items being sold by real companies...

Why not just fix the bugs that are already in the game, and redo the crafting system so that crafters can make everything that is needed in the game THEN introduce advertising? But in that avatars can advertidse THEIR shops ingame?
This would result in more people depositing because crafting would be easier and more productive, and because people can buy a good gun / armour / fap (delete as appropriate) from a crafter / shop!

Seems to me that MA just want to increase their income without the effort of fixing what is already in the game. Sorry, but I dont think this will enhance the game at all, and it certainly won't increase the 'loot' pool.

But then I could be wrong........... I hope I am.

There must be a reason for us to accept the adverts in the game, I will happily accept them if I can break even hunting.

I hope that the advertising bends nicely with PE and not something that disrupts our PE experience.

I have already have experienced publicity from Massive Incorporated while playing AO and i think the way it was integrated turned out really nice, i hope MindArk does such a good job.

And YAY more loot.

Yay! The race for the first 100K hof is on!

MA just tore a "Massive" hole in the fiction that created Calypso. I understand the need for revenue, but this maneuver makes me feel that MA is truly more concerned with the bottom line by any means than by attempting to generate revenue through satisfied customers.

What's next MA? banner ads on combibos? 30 second streaming media commercials for some product that you can't use in game every time I revive? Maybe I'll be able to watch Happy Days reruns ingame... I'd be especially interested in the one where Fonzie jumped the shark, as MA has now done.

I don't mind some adverts in PE :D as long is it gives at least A BIT better loot and stuff, AND as long that there ain't gonna pop some adverts right in my face when hunting or mining :D

Advertising - Im ready for it!! :D
Please lets have some cool stuff to splinter our sor eyes on the long nights.
Id like to buy a billboard above my shops window

Dear MA: How bout making a movie theater somewhere around the desert? It could be nice with a drivein for tired miners. I volunteer to sell tickets for a pec and a rock. I bet movies could be soo cool with a bunch of internationally uncensored adds.

Btw, I love french films...
