Mining sucks...

Some days I would swear that this game is more like playing the stock market than an MMO.

That's exactly what this game is. Mining is about as interesting as flipping burgers. Hence why the biggest cyclers are all bots... There is zero benefit to mining manually.

All the complexity is in the economy. Predicting trends, knowing when to buy and when to sell. Entropia is closer to a market simulator than a videogame.

I thought I read that you said this is not RNG. If you get downside, means there is a balance. Else, if all unlocked the code, they would suddenly get constant 200% TT return which is impossible. Hence why it is balanced to what ever MindArk have put as long term ,example 95% TT return. Some may get 99, others 89% but all in all, for all players = 95% (just for example).
Agreed, there's not enough resources in the system to do that. Mindark has to literally use Peter's PED to pay Paul. But doing that in a fair and balanced way is going to be tricky.

It needs to reward players that come up with unique strategies for "beating the game" but at the same time limiting the effect of those strategies once they have been discovered / overused, be it intentionally or unintentionally.

Oh the things I could tell you about mining, but you are not going to believe me.

Right now I am day 2 in on a little experiment and it's incredibly boring. Hopefully I will have some interesting data to share in a few days time.

So the experiment was a complete disaster... However it did reinforce something for me..

I have not played the stock market before, but I am getting a feeling that mining has a lot in common with that, it's about intuition and gut feelings and working out what the game is doing...

For example, here is one. Getting a massive amount of skill gains and no hits indicates to me that the location that I am mining at is correct, but the pool's level is too low...

So I have 2 choices, stop mining and wait for others to fill the pool for me, or bite the bullet, accept my ped loss as I channel those Peds into skills....

I picked option 1 and am now not mining, waiting for someone else to fill the pool.

I cannot share the python script that I am using that is helping me right now to get a grip on what I personally think is going on, it's just a tool that I am using as a basis for all my other findings.

It's got something to do with the inverse W function.

This is the thing as well, I have an impression or an opinion or a bias towards how it works. Perhaps I should see if I can find a mentor, show them how easy it is to find veins ..

Perhaps I should see if I can find a mentor
Yes that's actually the first thing you should do.

ps: its easy to find veins, just be careful what you inject in to them. o_O

Of course, there is veins. Its was designed like that , Entry point exit point random generated path..
But there are multiples mechanisms and exceptions in place to balance gains and losses, so it doesn't make much of a difference.
Its more for esthetics imo .

No there aren't, unless you talk about Project Entropia 15-20y ago.

I also do not know what the heck the system is doing at the moment, I am just not able to hit ANYTHING right now, it's really terrible. Going to take a break and think about it....

Suxorz

Try finding a mentor while waiting from break. This might make you from quitting mining next time.

No changes, mining still terrible.

Mine did pick up briefly plus really weird 5 rare robot beacons and 2 mining strong box in one go. Keep dropping should pick up eventually.

Mining is shit all month , cant get hof amped no chance, as usual no hofs no 95% return, losing 8k already, not a single game in plus that is 100+ runs .. Is sucks bad

See now this is the kind of stuff that is bothering me. I doubt that this game uses "random" standard distribution.

How can I say that, simple... The game has a memory of what locations have recently been bombed, if it was using something as simple as a dice roll, avatars would not need to move around and explore the area when mining in order to find resources. So either that data is pre populated and refreshed at certain intervals, or a massive db of black list locations that is created when a miner drops a probe.

So what is it, black, white or something else ?

If the stock market is something you have not done before, maybe you should not compare mining to the stock market then?

I think mentor is the key here.A good one.
No a platform where these questions can be asked and discussed like grown-ups is

What does a black or white list have to do with a stock market ?

Because you just said it yourself.

Also that is not true about massive skill gains. As it's not true in ANY of the professions. Drop over and over again in the same spot and you will get random "big" skill gains.

I think MA is going to have an engagement problem with mining. When players are successful they will play more, when they are not successful, they wont. This is simple. So why do miners not use alt-f4 more than what they should ?

If miners see that there is an obvious downswing in the amount of hits they are getting, why do they just struggle through it and not press alt f4 ?

Does that downswing effect all miners at the same time ? (Personally my answer to that is no and just opens a whole can of worms regarding a personal loot pool...)

Is the downswing area based ? (Personally once again, my answer to that is no and just opens a whole can of worms regarding a personal loot pool...)

Is the downswing time based ? (Once again, my answer to that is no and just opens a whole can of worms regarding a personal loot pool...)

The game should not care about who is the better miner, just as long as the loot out is +-95% of the ped value coming in.

We all know that the game is not entirely random, the constant downswings are proof of that. And no matter what an avatar does, they just cannot be mitigated.

Have you found a way to mitigate downswings, or do you just power through them ?

If you do 1-2 run yeah swing alot.

-too small budget

If you do 1000-2000 runs its nothing.

-sufficient budget

Do you have any other options then quit or power thro it?

Forget TT and focus on Average MU and aknowledge it is marathon for 5-10% profit instead of sprint with crazy profits.

This applies to those who mine no matter what.

Then there are people who wait for right moments but that is whole another story.

I appreciate this post, thanks a lot. A sufficient budget for me is just out of reach right now.. looks like I am going to have to mine when the returns are high if such a thing happens...

So I have to look at the timer, lovely, everyone who knows me, knows that I really dispise timers.....

Ah EU the only mmo that tells you when it's good to play...

Then be successful.easy choice :)

Easier said than done.. The interesting thing is no matter what algorithm I try the results seem to be the same...
